The European Union fined Alibaba’s AliExpress €550 million for failing to prevent the sale of illegal and unsafe products. This penalty represents the largest fine ever issued under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA). The DSA requires large platforms to manage risks from illicit goods like counterfeit items, unsafe toys, and dangerous cosmetics.
The European Commission found that AliExpress failed to adequately assess or mitigate the risks of illegal products on its platform. This enforcement follows a €200 million fine issued to Chinese retailer Temu in May for similar violations. AliExpress must submit a rectification plan by October 20, 2026.
