The TOP500 list released on June 23, 2026, named China’s LineShine the world’s fastest supercomputer. It displaced the U.S. system, El Capitan, to take the top spot.
The LineShine system operates at the National Supercomputing Centre in Shenzhen. It achieved a performance of 2.198 exaflops. This output is over 20% faster than El Capitan’s 1.809 exaflops. This marks the first time a Chinese system has held the number one position since 2017.
LineShine utilizes domestically designed, Arm-based processors in a CPU-only architecture. The system foregoes the graphics processing units (GPUs) that power most other top-tier machines. This architecture demonstrates China’s growing self-sufficiency in high-performance computing amid U.S. export controls.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise built the El Capitan system for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The U.S. system utilizes processors from AMD.
