Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will acquire Toronto-based AI chip startup Taalas for approximately $2.9 billion in cash and stock, according to a recent filing. The deal includes up to $1.4 billion in contingent consideration, depending on unspecified conditions. It was initially announced in August 2026.

Founded in 2023, Taalas makes model-specific silicon that hardwires an AI model’s parameters onto a chip. The approach aims to speed up AI inference and improve efficiency by reducing memory bottlenecks.

AMD plans to integrate Taalas’ technology into its accelerator roadmap and combine it with its Instinct GPUs to develop system-level solutions.
