Germany and France officially terminated their joint development of a next-generation fighter jet.
The aircraft served as the centerpiece for the €100 billion Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program.
This program budget is valued at approximately $115 billion.
Lead industrial partners Dassault Aviation and Airbus, which represented German and Spanish interests, failed to resolve years of disputes regarding work-sharing and intellectual property rights.
Negotiations also collapsed due to fundamental differences in the required capabilities for the aircraft.
German and French officials confirmed the cancellation after national leaders concluded the companies could not reach an agreement.
Authorities intend to salvage other FCAS elements, including the combat cloud data network and drone technologies.
Germany now plans to explore more realistic defense projects with France, shifting the landscape of European defense cooperation.
