Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) announced its aviation battery system for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft passed a critical safety test. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) witnessed the verification.

The test involved triggering two adjacent high-energy-density cells simultaneously without causing thermal runaway propagation. This achievement represents a world-first for this battery type.

CATL confirmed the aviation battery system is now ready for mass production. The technology meets stringent civil aviation safety standards.

Autoflight will first utilize the batteries in its passenger eVTOLs. CATL maintains a strategic investment in the aircraft manufacturer.

This development signals CATL’s formal expansion from electric vehicles into the emerging electric aviation sector.
