A federal jury in Waco, Texas, ordered Kioxia to pay Viasat Inc. $229 million in damages. The verdict delivered on July 16, 2026, found Kioxia infringed on a patent for flash memory technology. Viasat’s technology improves data reliability and reduces power consumption in memory chips. The U.S. satellite communications company first filed the lawsuit in November 2021.
Kioxia shares plunged 16.1% on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The stock hit its daily trading limit on July 17 following the announcement. Kioxia labeled the verdict unacceptable and plans to appeal the decision. The company confirmed the ruling will not impact its ability to provide products or services.
